My Furnace broke a World Record!!!

Today SCAN Marine received one of my three Wallas forced air furnaces. I have had it since 2011 and decided that it was time to send it in and get a full checkout.

The tech called me and told me that my furnace has set a new world record, at 27,000 hours!

WOW! That is pretty impressive! During that time I have replaced the glow plug a few times, and the thermocouple a couple times, and this spring I replaced the combustion fan.

They are replacing the burner, and the glow plug, and the thermocouple and sending it back, with a total charge of around $600 for the rebuild job.

Yippee, now I’ll try to put another 27,000 hours on it!

So now I have to decide...

I want to have a spare furnace onboard, since I have three total to heat my 4788. That gives me the ability to take a unit out of service, and either take my time repairing/rebuilding it, or send it off for service.

The 30DT is obsolete as is it’s replacement the 30GB, although there are some 30GB units available. the 30DT has proven to be a workhorse, but the new Viking furnaces are of course an improvement. They have a more advanced control panel and even have wifi and a app so that I can get usage and diagnostic information on my iPhone.

The only challenge is that I need to pull a new control cable to use the new Viking furnace, which is of course a bit of work.

I am inclined to start the transition to the new Viking furnaces by purchasing one of them, but am also considering just buying a 30GB as it uses the same old controller, and same cables I already have in place.
