  • 4788 FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT

Looking at 99 47 Bayliner, Broker says it needs a port fuel tank replaced . Does anyone know anything about removal and installation. Much appreciated .

    Hmmm

This is the first 4788 I've heard of that needs a fuel tank replaced.

My initial thought is to cut it out the side, but that's just me.

1995 3270 - a model in which fuel tank replacement is very common - Previous owners replaced one tank, and had other cleaned & epoxy lined. Epoxy repair is wayyyy less disruptive.
      I’d definitely consider epoxy

      Where is the boat?
      1985 Bayliner 3270
      110 Hino/Hurth 360A
previous = built own Roberts V495, circumnavigated
      previous = Apollo 27
previous = Folkes 39, sailed to Hawaii
      + few more before that..

Not sure where you are but petro-clean is my go to fuel tank issues. I would never trust a broker but get a good outside opinion first. Petro-clean out of Bellingham Wa. Said that the metal thickness on 4788 fuel tanks means they unlikely to need repair. Again ask the pros.

I saw the Yacht yesterday and got a look at the tank and its location. There wasn't any fuel presently on the loose and did not smell of diesel in the bilge.
In order to remove and replace tank the kitchen needs to be removed and of course the floor. My thought is the tank needs to be pressure tested to really determine if she leaks ..
Visually the top is exposed and looks fine . Thanks again.

            My question to you is...

Do you want to deal with a boat that the owner knows or thinks has problems, but is not doing anything proactive about them?

On the other hand, I’ve bought a lot of cars and boats over the decades that had totally misdiagnosed issues by boatyards and mechanics that were fishing for big $$ jobs. I’ve never seen any tank issues on a 4788. Speak to the owner directly and hear from his lips, why he thinks he needs a new tank. It’s usually always something simple.
