    Solo down the California Coast

The adventure continues this morning, as I leave Crescent City and start the run down the challenging California Coast, Solo of course!

Todays plan is easy, make it to Eureka and fill up the tanks with Diesel. The trip is 60 miles at 8 knots, between 7 and 8 hours of driving.

I am leaving at first light, which is something I really like to do. Get moving, and hopefully into poirt before the winds build for the day.

Today was a piece of cake. The winds were light, with a swell from abeam to abeam-aft.

I arrived here in eureka, and topped off my fuel. Since fueling up in La Push I have been averaging 1.64NMPG. This is at a variety of hull speeds from 7.5 to 9.0 knots at various RPM settings to match my travels for the day and my intended arrival time.

This morning I am leraving again at first light. This time I am heading for Fort Bragg.

Todays journey will be approx 92 miles. I will choose to bump up the speed to about 9 knots which is a bit less efficient but gives me a bit more speed.

Here is the windy map, and my route map for today.

Your AIS stopped transmitting (to me) at 330pm. a bit off Fort Bragg. I'm assuming you are in port by now.

Thanks guys! I am happily moored at the Noyo River marina in Fort Bragg California!
This is a step back in time! Today and probably tomorrow I'll be exploring. The plan is to launch the skiff, do some looking around, and find a place to tie it up while I walk around.

The marina is on the opposite side of the river from the waterfront businesses. I can see it, maybe a couple hundred feet away, but to walk there would be all day.
This is thew perfect place for a skiff ride, and I have zero hours in my new skiff anyway.

Here are a couple short videos for your enjoyment. They are not professional, just the opposite. Just videos taken from my iphone. I'll be taking plenty of photos today.

Have you ever been up the Miami River? They drag huge freighters up a river that narrow. Then throw in boats running on full plane weaving through the mix.

Nope, years ago you told me the Caribbean was calling my name.

So... I decided to move to Mexico. Maybe someday the Carribean, but I'm living in the tropics and love it. I'm freezing today in California!

I had a great day in Fort Bragg. Had local rockfish and chips at the Noyo fish company.

Fort bragg is a wonderful town but I am itching to move on. The northern California coast is COLD. I can live with the fog but not the cold.

So... This morning I am heading south for Bodega Bay.

Here is my planed route for today, and the wind map.

I am pushing my hull speed to 10 knots to shorten the day as the wind picks up every afternoon. I might even get up on plane a bit later this afternoon.

Along this part of the coast there is a dramatic difference between the wind nearshore and offshore so I am staying very close to the coast.
