Can you identify this song, from its lyrics?

I had learned a bar/pub song, may be 50 years ago, that I am now dying to find out what it was. Here are the lyrics as best as I can remember them.

There was a jolly old farmer I knew,
Who went out to drink ale.
    .....
To his wife came a soldier young,
While the farmer was out to drink ale.
    .....
The soldier kissed her red ruby lips,
While the farmer was out to drink ale.
    .....
But, the farmer stood right behind the door,
    To see all the rascality.
    .....
They thought he went out to drink ale,
They thought the farmer went out to drink ale.
    .....
The farmer shot the soldier yong,
And then he went out to drink ale.
    .....

I believe there was yet another verse, something to do with the moral of this story but I can't remember it. I remember the tune very well (don't ask me to sing it!). I tried many web sites to see if I could identify this song. I believe I learned the song while I was in Scotland, between 1970 and 1974.

Please let me know if you can identify this song.
