I have always been blessed with good vison. A couple of years ago I learned I had cataracts and had them removed before they effected my vision. I thought I was set for life with my eyes.
Well not exactly so. I had a yearly checkup in late Dec. of last year and my eyes were perfect. Sometime in Jan. I noticed things were wavy in my left eye. Not all the time and I didn't give it much thought. Then I noticed something in part of my eye that was like a small fan. Went around in a circle. This quickly got bigger and I couldn't read from that eye.
Back to the dr. and he sent me to another who worked on the inner eye. He mentioned macular degeneration but I always thought that was slow to progress.
Well after an exam that is what I have.
Hopefully this will be some good information for others.
There are two kinds of macular degeneration. Wet and dry. The dry is usually slow but there is nothing can be done for it. If noticed early eye vitamins can slow it down.
About 15% have the dry kind. That is what I have. There is treatment for the wet kind. If it is in the side of the eye it can be zapped with a laser. In the center it can't because the laser will destroy the eye.
The treatment is a shot directly in the eyeball. Starting once a month and if all goes well after 4 months once every 2 months. For most this is a lifetime thing.
60% will find this treatment a holding thing and won't get worst. 40% will show some improvement.
I am thankful to be one of the 40%. I could see improvement after the first shot. After the second I could read the eye chart 3 lines better. I had the first 3 shots in Florida and transferred to a Doctor in Michigan. I had the 4th shot last Monday. My vision is now 20/20 in both eyes. Of course the new Dr. has my records so he know how it was. He looked at me and ask several questions. Did I notice improvement. Well yes, sure did. I don't think he thought it was as bad as it was. He said my improvement was off the charts.
So I am hopeful I will be one of the few that this goes in remission. If not I am satisfied.
A couple of months ago I was driving at night. I closed my good eye and realized it wouldn't be safe for me to drive if both eyes were like that. Everything was dark. Like I had strong sunglasses on. That is now mostly gone. I wouldn't have a problem now. I just drove from Michigan to Florida and back. Straight through and had no vision problems.
If I didn't know I have a problem, I wouldn't know I had a problem.
What I do notice is things are smaller in my left eye. And slightly darker. But things stand out better. The black on white letters when reading are much more vivid so it is easy to read.
I will be in Canada with the boat when I need my Aug. shot. I took a car to Little Current and Ken (Iproff) who was going to visit anyway picked me up. I will have to pick up the car after we return with the boat. It will be a 300 one way trip to get the shot. A small thing in the overall picture.
I think my success may be because I got early treatment. Just a guess but maybe someone will benefit from what I have experienced,
Doug
