Ouch -Not the way to go.-gctid804602

Saw this when out yesterday, obviously you are supposed to go round islands not over. Can't really explain how this could have happened. Its an island perhaps a couple of hundred metres wide , there is a red navigation light approx 100 metres before the island

If you were unfamiliar with the area you can easily fail to see low lying islands from a distance if not paying attention , in the dark without a chart plotter or radar definately risky especially if you are shifting at 22- 25 knots as I assume this vessel was and I doubt it didn't have a chartplotter as a minimum.

Ruined someones Easter but sometimes you have to wonder how could this really happen. I believe the boat is locally owned so would be familiar with the hazards in that area. Sad to see but stuff happens.

Probably on autopilot and didn't edit the course the GPS laid in. Where was this?

With electronics these days, little excuse to hit ground even at night. Like someone said, likely on auto pilot and not paying attention.

Heia Viking by the way !

Several years ago I was going up the Sacramento Deep Water Channel and ran across a 26 ft. cabin cruiser about 30 ft. onto the bank, took down 5or 6 trees that were about 4 to 6 inches and laid them flat! both people on board were injured enough to be transported by Life Flight!

Reason: they were both drinking and believe it or not they were watching a ball game on TV!!!
