  • Engine hatch struts

Has anyone changed the engine hatch struts so that they're longer and open the engine hatch closer to a 90 degree angle. The hatch on my 2009 285SB doesn't open very far to make it comfortable for me to get in to work in the bilge.

When I needed to spend extended periods in the engine bay of my 285 I would just release the strut and bungie the hatch to the grab rail on the stern. I always put three bungies and a safety strap to make sure it didn't release and bonk me on the head.

This spring, I replaced the struts on my 2859 engine hatch with these from Amazon: Amazon.com: 20 inch 100 LB Gas Prop Struts Shocks 20" 445N Lift-Support Gas Spring with Mounting Brackets for Heavy Duty RV Bed Camper Bed Truck Bed Cover Hot Tub Cover (Suitable Support Weight: 85-110lbs) : Automotive They replaced the original struts and fit perfectly. I had to drill one new hole for each strut. They definitely hold up the cover without difficulty and the hatch is opened close to 90 degrees. No problem moving around the engine when in the compartment. Highly recommend, unless your hatch is totally different than mine.

I didn’t do my engine hatch but I’ve read of other people doing it. But I did do the exact same thing to my stern storage hatch. Replaced struts with longer ones. Very doable project and huge improvement.

I replaced all three with same lenght so I did not have to use the broom handle to prop them open. No issue with access but should have gone an extra 2 inches I suppose.
