The nav electronics on board are probably old enough to drink at this point but still functional for the type of boating that I do. ( for now)
GPS, Radar and Autopilot were all taking heading data from a KVH 1000 fluxgate compass.
This device has died- there is salt corrosion on the board that is terminal.
Looking at a replacement KVH, new ones are going for $8-900 if you can find one and used on E-Bay is still +/- $400 and then taking chances with used gear.
I have found a fluxgate heading sensor- Digital Yacht Hsc100 High Performance Fluxgate Sensor- https://www.hodgesmarine.com/dgyzdig...xoCIxkQAvD_BwE
That seems to fit the bill and it is a new ( ie- not used ) device- it has standard NMEA 0183 HDG, HDM, HDT and HCC output. My GPS- Garmin GPSMAp 3010C appears to be looking for the same sentences. There is no backbone or networking on this gear, the devices are hardwired to each other- not pretty under the dask but was functional until recently.
Since I do not need the the visual compass readout- does anyone have any words of caution against going this route?
or
Always glad to take an alternative approach.
A new suite of electronics is in the plan, but not this year.
