    Removing SeaCock

    I have attached the pictures of my thru hull scupper and the tapered cone seacock. I am at a loss to figure out how to remove the seacock. There does not seem to be any bolts coming up thru the hull to hold it on. I know that it threads onto the thru hull, but I did not want to just start cranking on it and do more damage. It does work, but the outside tightening nut broke off. it is on a 1982 3270. Thanks in advance for any help!

    The way you remove that is you do it from the inside.

    Remove the screws that keep the valve from turning first.

    Then unscrew the valve assembly. What you will have leftover is a threaded throughhull inside the boat.

    That can either be removed or reused.

      I did not see any screws other than the one that the ground wire is on. There were some on the scrupper, but they did not appear to go all the way through!

        I guess it is possible that they were removed and never put back in and the only thing holding it is the sealant.

          The normal attachment is to screw the sea cock into place, and then use screws to keep the seacock from rotating.

          Remember these are straight threads so the threads do not keep the seacock from turning much.

          If memory serves correctly you might, might even have a nut under the seacock that fastenens the throughhull to the hull, but I do not remember.

            There was no nut, but I was able to get it off. Will go put the new one on tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

            ​Frog, it appears there are some screws holding your strainer onto the hull bottom, my guess is there are two more on the opposite side possibly covered by layers of paint etc. Once that strainer is removed you may or may not find additional screws running up through the hull and into the through hull flange.
            Your seacock valve and flange appear to be all one piece so likely no additional screws.

              I did see those. I was not sure if they were there just to keep it from turning when the seacock was screwed on. I am always reluctant to start taking things apart for fear of making it worse...especially below the water line. But I guess that is the only way to find out. Thanks for your input.

              I was unable to remove those screws. Did not want to strip them out. I was able to get it to turn from inside the boat after squirting some kroil oil from inside and under the boat. Not sure if that did the trick, but when it finally moved, I was shocked....lol

            Also: these come two ways. A one piece through hull incorporating a strainer and a two piece set up where the through hull is a standard type and the strainer is an additional piece screwed over the top.

              I did not see any locking nut. There does not seem to be any space for one up under the seacock. So I am guessing that the seacock just threads down on it. Thanks!

            That plywood backing plate looks pretty rotten. You might want to replace this when you have the valve out.
