Is my Permatec aviation form a gasket still usable?

Hi Folks,

I am wondering if anyone knows how long aviation form a gasket will stay usable after being opened. The gunge looks fine and smells the same as it did 5 years ago when it was last opened . . . .

I use it when putting the exhaust risers and spacers together after a strip down and inspection. New gaskets, form a gasket, leave overnight before starting. Just not sure whether I should buy some more form a gasket or trust the stuff I have.

as long as its spreadable, its usable.... there are more adhesive types available from permatex if you feel the need to glue the parts together, but in my opinion, the only reason to use the permatex brand over a silicone gasket sealer is that the permatex products are more solvent resistant, such as when a sealer is needed where gasoline may come in contact with it.... silicone is oil and diesel resistant after it cures, but not resistant to prolonged exposure to gas.

there is also supposedly a Permatex product that is a replacement for OMC gasket sealer which I use on all the bolts on the outdrive (impeller bolts, bolts that hold the upper and lower together, anode bolts, etc). It is not actually the Aviation sealer but a related product just don't know which one. But for most purposed the Aviation stuff is close enough.

If it affects its ability to form a gasket, then it is not good. See how it spreads and if it's too thick and bunches up I wouldn't use it...

One of the ingredients is alcohol...you could take a bit and add some alcohol and see if it thins appropriately (see MSDS)...

I added some toluene and acetone to some vinyl cement and it brought it back to life (not suggesting toluene or acetone)...

Does not melt as others will.

Sometimes buying a small tube is a better buy then a larger size.

One of the ingredients is alcohol...you could take a bit and add some alcohol and see if it thins appropriately

Horton passed away earlier today.
