    05 Bayliner Starting Issues

    All,

We took our 05 Bayliner 185 series out today, boat fired right up without any issues. We took it up and down the lake for about 15 minutes. Made our way back in to pick some family up. We were docked for about 10 minutes or so. Fired the boat back up and and while in reverse backing up, it just died. We tried to start it over and over and it would not start. We tried some starter fluid but it did not help. We checked to see that we were getting a spark coming off the distributor and we were, we also checked for a spark at the plug wire that goes onto the distributor cap and rotor and we got a spark. Could the distributor cap/rotor be bad not allowing enough volts through the system? Also, we do not smell a mixture of fuel when trying this either. When cranking, it’s turning over and trying to start but it just doesnt(it appears it might be a little sluggish but not real bad so I’d estimate it’s about 80% or so to full power when cranking).

    Any help would be great!

    Thanks, Dan

What is the battery voltage when cranking? Are the connections clean and tight on both ends of the battery cables?

If she refuse to start with starting fluid then spark problem most likely...

Nauti_Mike both battery terminals look good/clean, and tightened. Our battery gauge is broke, we are going to hook up a small multimeter today and see what it measures when trying to crank it.

Ruffryder we get spark to the distributor cap, so more then likely the cap/rotor not distributing enough voltage?

A volt meter directly on the battery is the best way to check anyhow.

              What engine???
I tend to agree w Joon, if it doesn't attempt to fire with starting fluid there's something up with the ignition system. Remove the cap and check its condition, is it wet or corroded up in there? pull plugs and check thier condition also.

Tried this multiple times and still no fix sadly. More then likely going to have the Marina at the lake take a look at it.
