2855 contessa command bridge power steering

    Hey all,

ButterCallPaul is back but my account expired. Rick, or other wizards, hoping you see this

I'm on my 4th power steering belt on my power assist hydraulic pump in about as many boating hours. I've confirmed alignment after belt #2 and it's still breaking. Any ideas? Am I using the wrong belt size? Pump going out? I have VP-Aq225d (x2) on a 1986 contessa command bridge. Using belt 9341hd.

I almost sank last labor day after my bellows blew and had to replace bearings, bell housing and pressure plate. Needless to say it's been a long hard winter and I'm about to throw in the towel on this thing. Appreciate the help!

What is the failure of the belt look like? Clean break, shredded, ...

so you verified the alignment of the pullies is good but have you inspected them for nicks or burrs that could be cutting the belt? How are you tightening the belts? Overtighting them will cause failure.

Clean breaks, haven't seen burrs but will look for them, tightening just tight enough to get 45° rotation from the center. Before the break each time, the alternator belts squeel pretty badly. Going to Replace those belts this next time.

        Verify all pullies turn freely.

Never actually had a belt break. Thrown a few from pulley misalignment, evidence of rubber particle do to the same. This is a standard V belt? Is the power steering pump the only thing being driven by the belt or does it drive the engine circ pump too? Does the belt break during cruising rpm or does it happen at start up?
As Mike suggested, verify all the pulleys turn freely and listen for any unusual bearing noise from both the circ pump, alternator and power steering pump while doing so.

You need to verify that 1) both pulleys are the same size as to a 5,6,7, 0r 8 series belt, 2) then make sure you're using the correct belt.

Be sure that you are using a 1/2 inch wide belt and not a 3/8 belt that all the other brands use. Older V-6 and
V-8 Volvos used 1/2 inch on all pulleys until the joint venture engines.
