    Faria depth sounder issues-gctid406211

My boat is 3 years old now and all of a sudden the depth sounder has been acting up. Readings of 0.0 feet or 1.2 feet in deep water. I suspect the transducer. Has anyone any experience with the Faria unit? And where is it located? Thanks, Griff

Captain and Garry: The boat is a 2007 325. The false readings of 0.0 feet or 1.2 feet seem the same at plane or idle speed. I just wanted to check connections and try and diagnose exactly which component is amiss. The bad news is the location of the transducer access. It's amidship on the starboard side and I can't even see it when crawling into the midberth through the access panel. Only a snake with a flashlight could even get to see it! A continuity test would be nice, but can't get in there. The boat is lift kept, so I kayaked under to inspect the transducer. It was clean, but I scrubbed it anyway. From searching on the internet, it seems that transducer replacement is a "glue and or epoxy" affair. Not a happy job even if access could be had. I was just hoping that another BOC member had recovered from a similar problem and actually found a simple solution. The Faria units are supposed to be "lifetime warranty" but if in my case I require to change the transducer, I may just buy a competitor's depth sounder kit. Thanks for your reply. Griff

Well, We cruised to Shell key today and the naughty depth sounder was displaying it's bogus readings of 1.2 feet or 0.0 feet. The admiral started punching buttons on the darn thing and much to our suprise the sounder seemed to come back to life! I'll admit to not being digitally competent but am delighted to not have to deal with a tough and potentially nasty transducer replacement job. Thanks to Captain and Garry for your assistance. I hope the Faria depth sounder will stop misbehaving or else I'll call-up the admiral again! And Shell key was just fine today, gulf water temp is now 89 degrees. Griff
