    285 sb air conditioning issue-gctid406025

Hi, new to the forum and just purchased a 2007 285 SB. First I'd like to ask if there is any issues with the boat, or is everyone quite pleased with the bayliners??

But to the point, everything works well on the boat except on my A/C unit, I keep getting the HPF fault. I've looked up some fixes for it which include, cleaning strainer, running pump with strainer lid loose so water comes out and purges air. So I know the pump is working on the unit because it is sucking water into and through strainer. But this is as far as I know the water is going because there is no water coming out of discharge to lake on port side of boat. Am i missing something, is there another way to purge air out? The boat was out of water for a couple months while the guy was selling it. A/C unit blows air, and actually works and and off, with that fault keep going on and off, usually takes around 3-5 minutes before it goes on. Any help or anyone have this issue?

    Thanks

Your getting an HPF because there is no water flowing through the A/C unit. Water MUST flow in order for the a/c unit to function. You will know its working from either the sound of the pump (a sound you will get used to) or seeing the water actually coming out the side of the boat in a nice solid stream.

If you know the line is clean to the pump you can do this next. What I do to remove air from the pump, is when its on I remove the water line going ot the a/c unit. When the water starts BLASTING out, I then re-attach the line. Make sure the pumps impellar is running, get water to shoot out of the pump thats step one. Literally shoot out, not pour out but blast out at mach 50.(this will be ALOT of water so be ready to reattach that line)

Next, when the hose is attached, check for water flow outside the boat. If there is water, your good, if not you need to find where the line clog is. Next remove the water hose on the incoming end of the coils on the a/c unit. Do you have water flow up to there out of the water hose? If not you have something blocking your line, If you have water flow there, then attach the line, check for water out of the boat again. If no flow, next pull the water line at the other end of the coils going out the boat, and repeat water flow??? If you have no flow, you have something blocking your coils, if it flows there is something in that line which ive never heard of happening before...

99% of the time, there is air in the line and all you have to do is the 1st step I said. The problem is, if the pump runs hot because of air in the line and you have the pump in the pic below you can damage the pump. I learned this the hard way on my 3055 not knowing much about a/c systems.

If your pump impellar isnt turning you can open the unit, clean the impellar magnet up a bit and try to spin it manually with a screwdriver and the unit half open. Note this will dump alot of water into the bilge, lift the incoming water line side up in the air and the flow will stop. I have had to do this a few times, its annoying but it works for the most part. If you need more help just reply here. If your pump is toast, replacements are around 300 bucks, but you can get a CAL pump for 150ish and it works just the same or even better from what I have heard.

Biohazard is right. Our 2005 285 would not prime the AC pump. The factory guys had not taken gravity flow into account and had some of the water plumbing running a little uphill just prior to the strainer. I just repositioned the pipes so that when the seacock was open, water flowed to the strainer. Maybe the same guy installed your plumbing! Good luck with it. Grff

so i took the pump apart because impeller wasn't spinning and the magnet (impeller magent) was torn apart. Not sure how that would have happened but once a piece eroded off, it would have just started eroded the rest of it everytime it was turned on. So the broken off pieces were not allowing the impeller magnet to spin in the plastic . I cleaned it up, put it back together, pumped then worked (don't worry i will be replacing that impeller piece, if not just getting a whole new pump). I was by my self when i turned it back on but pump was pumping but again only for a minute, couldn't see if water came out at all for that short time. So next time i go down I will be making sure there is no clog between the inflow and outflow of the a/c unit. Didn't have enought time tonight to check if the impeller magnet just started breaking apart again or not. Thanks again for the help,

Alright, those parts are pretty tempermental on good days. Mine builds up dust and stops spinning.

If you know u had it spinning and it stopped, I would then try removing the water line going out of the pump. U want water to blast out of here with high preassure, not just pour out.

                      Do this,

                      1. Remove outgoing hose from pump

                      2. Get impellar going again

                      3. When water is BLASTING out of pump, insert hose

                      4. Just observe the pump, hows it sounding? You will be able to tell whats going on just by listening.

If the pump keeps running, now go check water. Do we have water flow now?

If no water flow, then start checking the a/c unit. There is stuff to clean those coils, just made for them.

Keep us updated on the progress, your going good. You may want to consider getting an equivilant 120v CAL PUMP replacement, just check for water flow to match your current pump and make sure its 120v.
