Adjusting OMC Cobra transom cable with old shift lever-gctid405693

I recently replaced my transom bracket shift cable because I was having difficulty shifting into reverse. When trying to follow the Hastings guide for doing this, found here:

    http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/kw-shift.html

It says that the adjustments are based on the "new" shift lever, seen in picture 19 here, and not the "old" shift lever seen in picture 18:

Well, of course, I have the old shift lever seen in Picture 18, not the one in 19. Am I screwed and have to buy a new shift lever? Does anyone have the adjustment distances for the old lever by chance? When I put it in the vertical position, it is still about 6 1/2 inches from the trunnion on the cable, so it seems like it would be ok.

I've put enough time and money into this boat, I can't see spending another $100+ on a new shift lever. This boat shifted for the past several years fine with prior owner, so there must be an adjustment amount of some sort in there, no?

So I think never mind possibly. It looks like the photos in the OMC service manual that I've got shows the old style shift lever, and has a measurement of 6 1/2". Any comments would be appreciated still, but I think I might be on track.

The 6 1/2" will be fine for yours. Just make sure you check the total throw distance of your remote control (forward to reverse) and set to the correct spot in that slotted grove on the lever according to items 63/64 on page 11-14 of the manual.
