    Although I feel that tuneups are best left to qualified Marine mechanics, a boater would probably benefit from knowing how the initial timing on an engine is set (usually at the factory) and how spark advance/retard procedures are done. U-Tube has lots of information for DIY types (be careful who you follow though).

    The first auto-mechanic video (Part 1,2,3) discusses setting the initial timing on a small block Chevy motor similar to Mercruiser and also points out one important difference that can occur between auto and marine engines. I checked the firing order and it is the same as this mechanic shows 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The position of the cylinders are also the same, Cyl 1 being at the front on the port side, I believe? In order to get the most out of these videos, you will need to pay more attention to the message and less attention to the messenger (and his bottle of Wild Turkey on the workbench):

    92 Cierra: I'd say to pay Mercury and get the big service manual. The one I have has got to be at least 2 inches thick, and follow it exactly. I have seen those tune/timing video's and they are informative. But if you are doing the tune up yourself, I reccommend the Mercury Mercruiser service manual as your guide. The one I have is #31, for 5.0L, 5.7L, ad 6.2L MPI engines. Good luck, Griff

      Also the Mercruiser Alpha One Gen II #14 service manual also in pdf 9.3 mb size

        Try your best to avoid the Automotive guides and procedures, unless you know precisely what crosses over into Marine.

        The first three videos all have Ignition Timing in their titles, but I did not see him bring out a timing light.

        Take the 20 minutes of valuable time (spent watching the videos), and spend it actually doing the work to your MARINE Engine.

        (I think that he's been drinking from that bottle on the work bench, and has mistaken Firing Order, for Ignition Timing)

          I agree. Get the mercury manuals. There are engine and outdrive manuals as well as trchnician guides for engine and outdrive. They are pricey. 150 bucks but well worth the money for the diy guy. The clymer and seloc manuals are ok but lack the specific detail for in depth repairs. As stated. You can usually find another boat owner with the in pdf format ready do share.

            I took a look closer look at my 350 this weekend. I think that with the proper guidance, I could do an idle and timing adjustment, at least. I can see the engine timing marker while standing over the port-side front of the engine and I placed a white paint marker at 0. Spark plugs are blind feel only since I have to crouch over and reach under the exhaust manifold....but doable. Distributor and coil are on the opposite side rear. This ignition system is breaker-less and appears not to have a vacuum advance (but I could be wrong).

            I would be pleased to receive the pdf manuals you mention.

            Anything more complicated than the above, I would be inclined to take it to a shop.
