    Westerbeke 8kw run without cooling?

Can i start my generator without seawater cooling? I mean now that my boat is docked i would see if the generator works and starts, just for a few seconds?

If it has closed cooling, running for a "short" time would be fine. Be sure the impeller is removed.

why being docked would prevent raw sea water from being used for cooling??

          Perhaps use a garden hose.
If not make the check short - it does not take too long to melt the exhaust hose etc.

With or without the impeller, I would be concerned about dry running the pump and damaging its bearings and spindle. Much better to stick a garden hose to push water through the system.
