  • Electric over hydraulic brake actuator recommendation/ experience.-gctid829149

I currently have surge brakes on my 20,000 lb triple axle disc brake trailer. For the most part they work fine on the road but it can be a little scary backing down the ramp with near 20,000 lbs and no trailer brakes in reverse.

I see various brands and types for sale. I was hoping to maybe get some recommendations on brands from someone with experience on their own trailer.

Im towing with a 2011 A GMC duramax diesel dually if that makes a difference.

I have a Titan Brakerite unit on mine, super happy with it. The truck controller is a Prodigy P2 and is fully adjustable so I can tweak it depending on the load and the speed of what I'm towing boat or dump trailer.

I have a Hydrastar on mine and love it!

Boat and trailer with water, fuel and gear is around 8K and the trailer will stop the truck if I get on the brakes hard!

Don,t forget to change the brakes to either discs or remove the free backing drum brakes!

If I did it again I would go to discs!

I already have disc. Tie down engineering brand 12 inch. I have a lee frig controller already installed. I should take a look at it to see what brand and type it is. I can tell you that with 3 axles of 12 inch disc brakes that even with surge brakes when i get hard on the brakes all the trailer tires will be sliding and smoking. My main purpose is backing down on the launches. I darn near lost it a year ago it was scary.

I believe my E/O unit is Kodiak, I'll correct this if it's different. On my prior truck I needed a Prodigy controller, something about E/O time delay. My 2012 F-250 has a built-in controller with settings for E/O. I can't imagine a better system...
