What is your engines operating temp.-gctid399975

1996 2359fv With 350 mag - alpha outdrive with 4 blade prop. My question is what should the standard operating temp? I had a thermostat problem and replaced that, along with water pump on the front of the engine. The water pump in the outdrive was replaced in april as part of the normal maint. This motor has always run @180-185 degree's. The thermostat is 160 degree's and I was thinking the temp should be closer to that. I changed the temp sending unit as well as the the dash unit, but still reads the same as before.

    Thanks for your input.

My engine has always run at 175F since I bought it. It came with raw water cooling, but I put the closed cooling on. I am running a 357 Mercury which has a 160F thermostat. I too have a brand new impeller in the seawater pump, I wouldnt worry about it too much IMHO.

Raw water cooled, fresh or salt water...., or closed cooling system? It makes a difference.

I believe that it also makes a difference whether TBI or MPI .

My raw water cooled SBC has a 140 T stat in it. Usually runs at 160 or just below. New sender unit, but I think the gauge is off a bit. However, it is a steady 160.

All my engines have always run at 160, all were raw water, fresh water. 5.0L, 7.4L. 5.7LX, 383MPI. Thermostats were all standard 160 degrees.
