Tech question for 2850 Bounty regarding AQ 280-290 series-gctid827413

What impact is there from long term idling in neutral?? With the trans being in the upper, if you are in neutral , the oil slinger is not turning. I would think that the upper bearings and gears would have issues with lack of lube over time.

Good question.....but I must ask.... what is "long term"?

You may find/read info that will advise against long periods of idle operation while in neutral. I think that this is a disclaimer of sorts!

The correct oil level will cover the lower driven gear.

Since any engine operation spins all three transmission gears, lubrication of these gears/bearings should be adequate while there is no load.

(the lower gear set will be stationary during this)

Once a load is placed on the entire drive, slinger pump action begins.

Perhaps also consider how long a person would need to run the engine while in neutral.

...... engine warm up........ what, maybe 15 minutes or so?

..... testing cooling system....... what, maybe the same as the above?

..... engine tuning, setting ignition advance, other testing....... perhaps no more than 15 to 20 minutes, and probably not all at one time!

I think that you'll be just fine! If concerned, feel the transmission for excessive heat!

The reason for the question is I'm considering a a large (250 A.) watercooled alternator for charging and house loads. So an hour a day might be the time frame

        OK..... I understand.

Unless this is a very expensive unit, most high amp alternators cut back the charge rate rather quickly.

At that much amperage, your Positive charge lead and your chassis Negative cable size will need to be substantially increased.

You'll also need a double shiv pulley system and two drive belts to spin it. [/color]

Just curious but why would such a large amp rated alternator be necessary? Most on board smart chargers are somewhere around 40-60 amp. What type of house bank you installing?

I have 4 6V GC's planned with the ability to run A/C while underway, and on the hook. I'm looking into using a Bosch, sealed watercooled alternator from a late model Audi. I have several laying around the shop, and are driven with a serp belt. Seems like a win win.
