    7.4l motor alignment question-gctid825561

    Started the alignment procedure today and i have it so the alignment bar slides in and out with 2 fingers............in one spot! Turn the motor over 180 degrees and its tighter. Bar still goes in and out but not as nicely. Fairly tight. Played with it for another few hours and can not get it smooth in all positions. 0- 90- 180- 270 degrees. New mounts all around. New transom and stringers and new hd coupler.

    Could the coupler not be aligned on the flywheel? Not sure why it would be so good in one spot but tight 180 degrees from there.

    did you try tweaking the gimbal bearing?

      Yes tried that. But just got the admiral out on the boat to save so many trips up and down and i think i have it now. Got down and looked at the gap between the flywheel housing and transom plate and could see i was low at the front. Raised the front a bunch and it slides in like butter in all positions equally now. So much easier with some help.

      Was getting ready to slide the motor forward to check the coupler to flywheel alignment!lol!! Dont think i can get it any better. Whew!

        Sketch you must be close to a test run on the muffs :cheer: I remember doing the alignment process after my rebuild. Started out having the bar inserted into the coupler without the gimbal bearing installed, then horsed the engine around till the bar looked centered in the gimbal bearings housing. Had to add 1/2" spacers under the front engine mounts because I didn't have enough thread left on them to go any higher. After the bearing went in a few tweaks to get it sliding like butter.

          I was able to get rid of the 3/8 plywood spacer tbat was under the port side motor mount. Happy about that. The mounts are sitting about 3/4 of the way up the stud. So no need for shims. I am using the newer style rear mounts without the spacers now.

          Be a bit yet before i can run the motor as i am not abke to find HGE aluminum exhaust anywhere in canada or the states right now. Everyone is sold out and waiting for more to arrive from China!! By end of weekend i should be at a standstill because of that. Coming together quick now.
