    Oil levelput in th-gctid825032

Contacted the forum last year about an on/off alarm. The issue turned out to be to lite of oil weight and the engine ( in question ) showed low oil when drained. Note. Oil was changed a couple years prior by marina. hen dropped for the summer , before it was moved from the crane station, an "assistant " mechanic told us that he had placed too much oil by mistake. They sucked out the excess, things were good. Our mechanic passed away and as a result, the oil was not changed last year ( when the alarm issue started at the end of the season. When the oil issue ( not heavy enough ) was discovered, we drained ( via dip stick ) the engine oil. Starboard engine showed down about 2 quarts. To make sure, we had the marine evacuate the engine oil on both engines. They advised that the starboard engine was empty. Also that a "cap" was missing on the engine ( I assume valve cover ) they stated they replaced it. Now for the interesting, confusing part. We replaced the filters and oil . Mercury Quicksilver straight 40. Each quart was put in the engines with a measured container ( 1 qt ). Mercury engine owners manual say 5 qts., plus one half qt if changing filter. At any rate, engines run fine, no alarm. Yesterday went out and after checked oil levels. Both engines show well over full on dip stick. Looking for knowledge, thoughts and or insight. Any help appreciated. Please excuse the "book" , just wanted to make sure I explained it right.

Five plus one for the filter sounds, without looking it up, like one over to me. There's also a tall and short filter that apply to the GM engines. What I don't understand is why the engine oil wasn't checked, engines started and run for a few minutes, after adding five quarts of oil then topped off. For myself, I'd be looking for a more competent shop.

You are correct about too much oil. Checked again and it says 4 plus 3/4 for new filter , will remove excess. Thanks so much again.
