  • Engine compartment flooding -- see attached video-gctid823901

2006 Mercruser 3.0 L has water flooding into engine compartment when engine is running. Boat is docked at distant lake so I cannot see it. Son sent ATTACHED PHOTOS. Leak is on right side of engine (battery side) and on opposite side of engine from drain hoses. It appears to be approximately 10 inches below dipstick knob.

Any advice you might offer on diagnosis and repair would be greatly appreciated. What tools should I take to repair it? Should I buy parts before going to lake? Do I need to pull boat out of water to repair? Thanks, Jerry

If it only leaks with the engine running it may just be a bad hose connection or split hose. You'll need to get your head down in there to find the source.

I would say its hose that came off or damaged... or a frost plug has come out.

If its a hose you can use a rad hose repair kit for a temp solution to at least get it on the trailer. If it is a hose I would change it out after, once they fail they are just waiting to fail again. Frost plug can be done with engine in depending on clearance.

You've probably already go this solved, but if not, a cell phone can be held down beside the engine to get a pic.

I would get the boat out of the water and remove the drain plug to get all the water out of the bilge. Then get a bright flashlight and hook up water muffs to the drive and start the engine. Then you can get in the bilge and more clearly see where the water is coming from.

This would leak all the time not just when the engine is running.
