We've had our present boat for 10 years and the tach has never functioned properly. It mostly over states the actual RPM, though at times it functions accurately. Tapping on the glass face causes it to function correctly for a short period, but then it seems to short out and the needle starts bouncing then returns to a fictitiously high reading. I've removed and cleaned the terminals. Is this simply a bad tach?

Sounds like I should remove the tach and tear it down. Thanks all.

If it's a Faria gauge they do have a warranty but I'm guessing the age of yours makes it out of warranty. Their website says that a tach repair charge is $100. I had an intermittent problem with the tach on my 275 and finally it quit working altogether. Bought another Faria replacement off eBay for $95. Cheaper than paying Faria to repair it.
