Prop question on new aquired boat-gctid823114

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and bayliner ownership. I just got a 1986 bayliner capri 15ft 7in Boat with the Volvo penta Aq131/275 and I cant get it to plain out. the bayliner came with a parts boat with similar setup but it is like a 17 ft invader. The prop has been "somewhat freshly" removed leading me to believe the bigger boats prop was put on the bayliner. no other prop present. I bought another guys project. Question is Im having a hard time finding specs on my little liner with inboard. smallest i found was that comes close is 1650 models.

What should my prop specs be?

Is it stamped some where on the prop to identify its self? (Its still on boat)

And I want to thank everybody on the forum for all their information, While this is my first post, Ive been here many times getting this boat together

is your prop damaged? 13.5 to 14.5 diameter and 17 to 19 inch pitch will be a good place to start. Your hub could be spun. The prop size or part number may be on the under side of the hub or stamped in the prop.

Thanks for trying to help. the prop has some nicks in it but not damaged.

I just got the boat on the water from sitting for 2 years. guy I got it from said he had it on the water and lost spark, couldn't figure it out and gave up. Well the points were shot. I replaced it with A hot spark ignition kit, reset the timing (off a tooth),with good gas she fired right up. He claimed the parts one was left in a field to rot he got for the starter(that was dead by the time i got it,probably from cranking it a bunch fighting timing when it did spark) and other little parts. Thats the background I know.

So I take it out throtle up and wait for it to plane and it never does. I can barley see over the bow.Now this observation was from the very first trip out and had to cut it short cause of a leaking sea water seal. I'll try to get more info ya'll need like rpm. ive got to fix that gauge and spedo.

I live lake side so I'll take it out in the morning and see what she does in more open water (didnt have it tagged during test run tagged now)

The size of your prop will be stamped on the hub in the back of the prop. You should be able to see prop size when it is mounted on your boat. Let us know what that says.

What were your RPM's when you were trying to plane?

How much water came into the boat?

The stern drive gear ratio should be stamped on the drive somewhere, can you find it?

Check the hull for cracks and any place that water can intrude.

Let us know what you find and we'll go from there.

Ok The prop says 14 R 17 mwc and is dinged up a bit.

Hate to guess on rpm. when I take it out today i'll try to get it working

As far as water in the boat ,The hull its self is water tight. I let it float all day when I first got it and stayed dry.The fresh water line going to the ex changer wont seal on exhaust side. has new seals just crappy design.I added a dab of rtv.

Looked all over for the gear ratio and cant find it. anyway to narrow down where it can be stamped?

I could probably use a new prop cause of how ruff this one looks (I'll try to post pics). Nothing in this boat has cost me too much.I bought the pair for $800 bucks and already sold the parts trailer for $200. had to buy a starter from DB, hot spark, water rings and fluid change so far.So I'm definitely ahead of my self and can spend a little more if needed.

Your prop is 14 inch diameter, 17 pitch. That size prop should provide plenty of acceleration.

Two things now to check: RPM and stern drive trim.

What RPM are you setting when trying to get on plane? Should be at least 3600 rpm, but check your manual for recommended cruise power setting.

What is your drive trimmed to? Should be somewhere between two bottom marks. You will probably never get on plane if you have motor trimmed to middle position.

Ok I'm new at this boating world my biggest previous boat was a 8ft flat bottom. so excuse me if I ask dumb questions but I catch on fast.

I had it trimmed down (pushing dash switch down till it stopped) Now I dont know what trim marking. is there more trim settings other than from dash?

If I'm asking about things that are covered on another thread, please let me know.

Dont mean to get off topic any quick suggestions to get RPM gauge working (haven't even look at it yet) It has US Marine gauges.

Eufala, I'm not familiar with your trim control setup. Is the stern drive straight down when trimmed in full down position?

Regarding RPM gauge, it is common problem to have no indication or faulty reading. Look at the back of the gauge and see if there is anything obvious. The wiring for my RPM gauge is pushed on vice clamped with bolts. Every year I have to clean the connectors and put some dilectric grease on the posts. You may need to wire brush the posts in back of the gauge. Usually you can access gauge from underneath.

FYI, a AQ275 sterndrive doesn't have trim control.

Ok had it out all day yesterday and part of the night. I didnt hook the tach back up when I did the hot spark. I was trying to get it up about 800 rpms shy. A guy at the ramp pointed out the marks and Im on the lowest one. after a quick boat balance ( moving cooler and a person forward) she plained out fine. So I'm going to go out and enjoy the long weekend on the lake. Thanks everybody for helping, your the best. wish me luck!
