I understand there are 4 wires: Neutral, ground, 120, and 120.

Think in terms of two legs, each @ 120 vac (often referred to as L1 and L2 or Line 1 and Line 2)

Then you'll have one Neutral ...... and one Earth Ground. [/color]

Yes, it is single phase 120/240 service just like your house. The two hots are 180 degrees out of phase. To test that dock is correctly wired volt meter should read 240 hot to hot and 120 either hot to neutral.

if you put the VOM black lead onto one of the hot 50a wires,

and the VOM red lead onto the other hot 50a wire: does the voltage read 240

or does it read as zero?

I understand there are 4 wires: Neutral, ground, 120, and 120.

are the two 120 wires 180degrees out of phase, similar to

the two 120 legs of a home electrical panel?
Working...
