    Battery switch charging question-gctid820151

We moved. No more shore cord power at our new docks. I have been relying on the alternator to charge the batteries. With this set up, I've begun running on just one battery so that if we drain it too much we can fall back to the fully charged battery for starting. After reading another post, it sounded like IF we have the switch on say battery 1, that is the only battery being charged. Is that correct? In other words, with the engine running do I need to be set on "BOTH" to charge both? Thanks for any help. Oh, only 2 deep cycle batteries, 1 switch for "1", 2" or "BOTH."

Yes, I am talking about charging via alternator. What is an ACR? Did you see the attached photo's of my system?

      Thanks.

        1..... ACR = auto charge relay .

2..... yes, but a schematic would give us much more information.

I suggest a word of caution.

In one of my 4x4 vehicles I had a similar switch. In that case, if you moved the switch while the motor was running there is a chance it might damage the alternator.

I'm sure the is someone on this forum who knows the in an out of this. All I can say is it was an expensive mistake on my part.

          Just a thought.

I think that we'd need to go far back in time to find an MBSS that could cause damage while switching between batt banks while the engine is running.

Most all Marine MBSSs today offer what we call "Make-Before-Break" style contacts. This means that (for example), prior to the internal contacts letting go of Batt Bank #1, the contacts have already gained continuity with Batt Bank #2. This prevents disruption of the alternator field circuit.

However, passing through the OFF position (while the engine is running) may cause damage such as what you have described. [/color]
