    Norcold Fridge Died-gctid816947

Thinking it is the transformer. Should I try to replace or trash the whole fridge? Fridge is 18 years old don't want to invest a lot and then have compressor fail. If new fridge what make and model is recommended.

    Cheers

Did it die on the AC side, the DC side, or both?

both strong smell of burning transformer and it was very hot. compressor gave no warning at all both through performance or current draw.

If you can afford a new one you will appreciate the quiet and energy saving newer units.

Makes shure it has the Danfoss compressor. I have a Novakool unit. Great product.

I sold my Norcold fridge because it was so noisy. I replaced it with a 110V fridge that runs off my inverter. Way cheaper than a ac/dc fridge.

i agree with joe440. I replaced my 110/12v unit with a Whirlpool 110v A/C refrigerator. I have a 2000 watt inverter hooked up to the house bank (4 golf cart batter's). I have had this unit since 2004. I could replace this refrigerator at least 4 or 5 times for what I would pay for a 110/12v unit.

How did you get the Whirlpool on board? Did you have to remove a window frame or door frame to get opening big enough. Have a 4387 and door opening is only 22".

FYI A marine electrician friend reminded me to always check that the ground goes to the chassis on any domestic appliance used on board. Most do, but a few out there combine the neutral and ground in the junction box. It is an easy fix, but essential to the proper function of the galvanic isolator.

When my Norcold died last year, i replaced it with about 2 times larger 110 fridge and inverter.

I got lucky that my boat had a factory installed 2.0 AWG windlass wire running close to AC panel, and the cabinet behind the panel had a perfect space to mount an inverter.

The installation was easy, and the new fridge is larger, quieter, and cheaper than the original.

That was the one mod that got me the most approval points from the Admiral .

DMcKSR I took off both doors of the Whirlpool unit. I lifted the rear sliding door up and removed it from the tracks. It came right through the door opening and went down into the galley. Put the doors back on the unit and sled it into the opening that had been trimmed half inch or one side and across the top.

Replaced my Novacool with a Vitrifrigo unit. Lasted 4 years and had to replace it again. Would NOT recommend Vitrifrigo brad.

Isotherm seriously deserves your attention. Ours works beautifully, new last year. It pays pretty good attention to the thermostat and doesn't require constant attention.

As with joe440 our new norcold is so noise we can't run it at night, keeps the people in the next boat from sleeping
