    Help me diagnose new noise...-gctid816821

    Hi

Was on the first long trip in the flybridge recently, Bayliner Ciera 2852 with 454" and Bravo 2. I think there's a new noise. When cruising at 2200 rpm and 9 mph, which we did for hours, going straight ahead it sounds fine. But when turning there's a rumbling-like noise. To both sides, but loudest when turning right. I've had the engine room open, noise doesn't seem to get louder, but it's there.

My first guess would be the universal joints at the rear of the engine, but it's just a guess. Or anything loose? Any ideas on what it is (normal?)? Or things I could do to check/test, while it's in the water? I'd really like to keep it in the water until our short season is gone end August.

    Thanks

    I'd suspect the gimbal bearing.

Gimbal bearing or U Joints. Same area, and you may as well do them both "while you are in there". It's also probably time to do the bellows, which is also in the same area.

About the bellows, seller showed med receipt for bellows 3 years old, how can you tell if 3 or 13 years old?

You should check the engine alignment as well. I had a new noise( a rumble) and had to turn the idle to keep it going but I let it go to long and ended up having to replace the completely worn out engine coupler. But my u-joints and gamble were still just fine.

You want to check for cracks and general wear and tear or deterioration. At 3 years, I would replace anyways. They are cheap parts that are always worth replacing often for piece of mind.

If it's 13 years old the way to tell is your boat will sit really low in the slip. On a serious note, tilt the drive all the way up and feel it. Should be supple. If it's stiff, it's wearing out and will eventually crack.

Thanks for input. I've now looked at if this is a job for me, so any DYIers, please chime in.

Bellows: I've done that myself on my Baja, Bravo 1, I guess it's the same on Bravo 2?

Gimball bearing: Looks easy if you purchase the two special tools, puller and drive rod?

U-joints: Can they be replaced without disassembling the drive, as easily as the u-joints on a car propshaft?

Last area that the book talks about is Pinion gear, can I check without disassemble? If I have to take drive apart, it's probably beyond me...

Any good place to buy parts and tools, I normally just find it bit by bit on ebay?

                    same on Bravo 2,

alignment bar, hinge pin tool can be purchased on Amazon around $50,

slide hammer can be rented easily at your local auto part store,

Ujoint crosses can be replaced without disassembling the drive, just need a big C clamp.
