Hello all, I picked up a 1988 Capri with the OMC 3.0 last year and have been messing with getting her back up to speed. The boat starts up and will run wide open for about 20 min or so then slowly starts to bog down and eventually die at which point you can restart in neutral and rev/throttle all day but once in gear it won't throttle up, it has a bogged down sound when I try.

It was converted to electronic ignition before I got it but I do not see where the "diode fix" is in the wire between the coil and the shift assist, Could this be my issue? I am not sure If the conversion was done after the prior owner took it out of the water for the last time or if he was running it with the current setup, The boat sat for three years before it was given to me.

I have cleaned out the fuel tank and pump and replaced fuel lines and replaced the coil. Thanks in advance, T

What you're experiencing sounds like a sticking or mis-rigged shift interrupt switch, or a sticking ESA switch cam. When you shift the switch is supposed to be actuated momentarily and this signals the ESA module to cut out some cylinders. These videos show the switch and cam. The cam is sticking in the first one and is working properly in the second one:

OMC DRIVE ESA (Electronic Shift Assist) before cleaning and freeing cable (zip tie).

OMC DRIVE ESA (Electronic Shift Assist) after cleaning and freeing cable (zip tie).

Thank you I will have a look at that. looks like an easy fix with some lube or worst case a new switch, still curios that the boat will function properly for 20 plus minutes before acting up, I seems to me that something in the ignition is getting hot and not working properly or fuel starvation

          +1

Run it with the fuel cap cracked open and see if it does it. If it runs OK it, the fuel tank vent is clogged.

I had the diode fix built on a circuit board and mounted it in a small fly box. Boat shifted nicely after that. The P.O. had a mickey mouse setup on it and you can see the diodes mounted in a big blob of orange silicone on the side of the coil. I removed them afterwards. It was hard to shift beforehand as it would not stumble the ignition. I had the pertronix conversion on my 1989 2359.

Maybe the op has that ?

Thank You, thats a tidy setup (unlike the orange blob), I have the diodes on order and will be soldering and heat shrinking , no orange silicone here

I printed off the diode diagram from pertronix and took it into an electronics repair shop and the guy had a nice little circuit board on hand. Cost me 60. Nice and neat.

So a upgrade kit on a thirty year old dizzy and a 30 year old esa module, with a diode fix.

Shift interrupt switch visually appears to be working properly, thanks for the suggestion.
