Changing Gimbal Bearing Volvo Penta 260a w/280 Outdrive Questions-gctid814529

    Hey Guys,

I'm about to swap out a busted Gimbal bearing and bellows on a Volvo Penta 260a with a 280 outdrive. This is on an 85 24' Bayliner Ciera Command Bridge.

Has anyone on here done this, or a similar job, that could lend me some expertise? I've been told from some sources that the engine needs to be pulled to get at the gimbal bearing, others say you might be able to just remove the outdrive to get at it with a slide hammer.

If anyone has any input on this it would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm about to bring her into the shop next weekend to do the work.

If I'm posting in the wrong place please feel free to let me know!

VP AQs do not run gimbal bearings. You want to call them PDS bearings, and this is well documented here. And yes, the engine needs to come out.
