On mine it's basically hollow and the fwd and aft edges have angled approx. 1.25" x1.25" wooden stringers that the upholstered panels attach to so most likely you saw sawdust from the backing panel of the padded panel. When I bought mine last July the stringers were rotted so I removed it for refurb and upgrades. Below is a view looking from the base of the side, narrowing as it reaches the bend/ transition to the top.
