Just wondering if any of you out there can help me.

I have just stripped down the tilt rams and fitted new seals. Before I replace them do I have to put any oil in the rams between the piston and ram. When I stripped them down there was what looked like engine oil present in the above mentioned area. The seals had worn out as the reservoir oil was milky. The oil between the ram and piston was like new. This is the first time I have changed the seals and any advice advice would be gratefully received.

Priming the rams with oil will reduce your "bleed time" after you install them. There's a Mercruiser procedure you can follow to do this basically pushing as much oil in on one side of the piston before installing the hydraulic line for the other side. I'm on my cell now or I could post the PDF. After all hydraulic lines are in place, running the pump up/down a few times will bleed the remaining air from the rams.
