    update on water in cylinders-gctid811190

Just took exhaust heads off 4.3 engine and starboard side head.Exhaust heads shot!!See pics.Decided to take engime head to machine shop for close inspection and rebuild.port side head is clean and sweet.$900.00 dollars for new exhaust. They stopped making what i got back in 1989.They say exhaust heads in saltwater should be changed or at least tested every 5 years or so.Do you think?

What you have again engine manufacture wise ... i'm thinking omc batwing all in one piece mani and elbow.

You may have to go with a center style mani and elbow setup.

Problem may be the mani the way it sits up on the head might not clear it.

Maybe you can ask the mod to merge this thread with the original one so we would know what year and make of the engine, it matters.

      Edit :

Went to the other thread it is a omc.

If the exhaust port onnyoyr head are "shot". From what was the cause?. If corrosion then you also have a exhust manifold /flapper problem. Do not reinstall.the old exhaust and knkw that the other side is in the same condition.

If you reinstall the current exhaust manifolds you will have the same problem again real fast.

No way these exhaust heads are going back in.Already in the hands of the scrap dude.Found set set from Barr marine that will fit but will need longer mounting bolts and may need reworking of dog house. Will know when new parts arrive next week. The old heads were eat up with rust on the endside bad.Water ports were 75%closed up with rust.Amazing the engine never over heated.

So heads manis and elbows are going to be new, then you could go with the center rise mani's.

When running in salt water, flush the saltwater out with fresh water after use, I believe that there are kits for this or one can be made up.

After flushing with fresh water drain that water out.

Ok to make the late style exhaust worknon your pre Vortec OMC you will need:

The Barr Volvo style center riser exhaust

Also the Barr 4" to 3.5" 90* adapter because the new risers are 4" diameter while the OMC y pipe is 3.5". Also will need a length of 4" ex hose.

Had a similar prob on mine but it was due to bad head gaskets not exhsust. Installing 2 re man heads and new exhsust & Fel Pro marine gasket set.
