    Hino EH700 White Smoke

Last year we bought our 38xx, shipped it from back east to Anacortes and started work. Earl did extensive exhaust rehab and new impellers. We moved the boat from Anacortes to Petersburg Alaska in July 2016. Shortly into the trip we noticed the white smoke. It would come and go but mostly ever present. We lost a thrust washer in a transmission the end of the season so pulled that our and brought it home for rebuild. In the tear down I noticed that the intake to the transmission cooler was plugged. Pieces of impeller had plugged pretty much every hole on the intake side. How any cooling water got through baffles me but the engines ran 160 degrees for over a thousand miles like that. I changed the cooler on the second transmission last week. Same thing. Plugged 100 percent with goo and impeller. Best part of this is that there is no longer any sign of "white smoke". Suggest that this trouble possibility be added to the Hino data base file. I would have fixed this much earlier had I known.

Anybody want to question durability issues? I'd be nervous about the white smoke for years myself, but that's the way I am.

      Interesting!
Did you have steam or white smoke from combustion issues?
I had steam on stbd and white smoke from unburnt fuel on both. I also found mostly plugged transmission coolers. Earl is also doing a job on both manicoolers and elbows. I’m hoping steam will be gone. I’m testing injectors for spray pattern as first step in in burnt fuel issue. Glad it worked out for you so easily.

I tried anodes in the transmission coolers for about a month. The sluff started clogging the tubes, so I took the anodes out and made sure I have good continuity between the coolers and transmissions. Since then both have failed and have been replaced.

Looks like both you and Smitty saying zincs are causing blockages. You saw my photos and Radiator shop said it was a zinc oxide and the blockage was pretty extreme. I did see that grounding studs on my trans cooler were present but unused. I’ll ask Earl for opinion on zincs vs grounded.
I wonder if barnacle buster every twenty years to melt zinc residues and marine growth is a good idea. Not cheap but I’ve seen what strong acid does to that zinc deposits and I was impressed. That was my own muriatic acid and water brew I created, not barnacle buster.

My thinking is the U-bolts that secure the cooler to the bracket should ground it…..but now I have to go test the darn thing. Sheesh! Rather than Barnacle Buster or Muriatic Acid, what about an easy to use fresh water flush at your home slip? You could even inject Salt Away. Just a stray thought….

The same reason we always bought the coolers with no zincs.

I am very surprised at this one.
I have worked on these engines where the PO had impellers blow up and in each case the impeller bit went thru the trans coolers and intercooler tubes (both larger holes) and ended up in the manicooler bundle intakes.
One of our boats that we moved from Florida to NY was plugged really bad like that but still did not overheat or white smoke the entire way home, most travel at 15-17 knots along the way.
Here are some pictures of what we found on one of the engines when we pulled off the end cap, holes much smaller in the bundle tubes....

This thread is almost 6 years old, not sure if Dave is still active here.
