    More HP-gctid809150

    Hello All,

I have a 1986 3270 Bayliner MotorYacht. The boat I have, has the twin 110 HP HINO's in them. I noticed on the parts manual, that the 110HP engines, have the same components as the 150HP HINO's. Is there a way to turn the 110's into the 150's by adding the turbocharger system, etc....?

    Thank you all in advance!!

Long and short of what I've read before. The 110HP (Naturally aspirated) is a 244CI motor whereas the 135/150/210 is 234CI. Keeping yours Naturally aspirated is worth more in the long run as the speed/HP/fuel mileage doesn't pencil the effort or cost. Your motor will last longer than the turbocharged model if maintained properly.

Just to play devils advocate. . .

How many hours on the engines and how healthy are they? How many hours a year do you put on them? "Naturally Aspirated" lasts longer doesn't mean much if you only put ~150 hours a year on the engines

HP is rpm dependent, as is boost. Even with a turbo setup capable of supporting 1000 HP, you can still run "Trawler Speed" and produce little to no boost which wouldn't be much different than what your engine is seeing now. You'll only spool up the turbo and burn more fuel (and subsequently produce more HP) when you throttle the engine up and get the RPM's up into cruise.

. . .More or less, that's slightly exaggerated

If, IF your engine is healthy, I say go for it! Especially if getting somewhere a little bit quicker or being able to go a little bit farther in the same amount of time is worth it to you.

Now to your question, you really need to either talk to someone who has done what you are talking about -OR- start cross referencing part numbers between each engine to see what the differences are. In general, outside of the obvious bolt on bits, you will probably have to have your fuel curve remapped. I don't know if you would require a cam change :S

Good luck! Wrenching is fun, as is going fast

Also, from what I have read, the higher hp Hinos came with stronger transmissions. The Hurth 630. Adding almost 50% horsepower to your current Hurth 360 will more than likely shorten its life.

That was one of my concerns - tearing up the transmission. Thank you for the insight!!

Engines have about 2500 hours on them. As for how much I am planning on using the boat, I am currently on the Great Loop, and have put about 4700 miles on the engines since last August. I am sure upon our return, we will continue to do more traveling.

This sounds like it would be quite the project, and could cause significant damage to what is currently "working".

              As for part numbers, etc...https://www.marinepartssupply.com/engines/hino

When looking for parts for my 110HP engine: * Note : Use the 150HP W04 parts book. The 110HP and 150HP share most parts. Exhaust elbows and injectors vary.

Perhaps price these out times 2:

                - Injectors

                - Elbows

                - Turbo's

                - Turbo coolant , oil and return lines and fittings

                - Intercoolers

                - Intercooler lines and fittings

                - Injection pump

                - Intercooler hard hoses and lines

                - Transmission

                - Propeller

I am sure I am missing a few things as well.

In most every case it will get you in the ballpark of considering nothing or a different boat.
