Replacing floor carpet, Is It Worth Laying One Layer Of Fiberglass On Floor before?-gctid397573

I have a 90 which doesn't or at least seems like it has no fiberglass on the top side of the deck. It's solid but the carpet is shot and is getting replace as soon as I find the time. The back section gets wet occasionally like most and I was wondering if it would be worth putting down one layer of glass before I do the carpet to keep things down the road and help stiffen the floor up a bit in the process? Now would be the time if ever I guess and I intend to run this boat for years to come. It's in solid shape now aside from a small mid section I fixed years ago successfully. I have lots of body shop experience and the sanders to speed things up, I've just never done much boat body work but at least I don't have to worry about making it "pretty".

If it is a good idea then where is the cheapest place to buy the fiberglass mat? I assume the best place for the fiberglass gell is by the gallon at Wallyworld or Auto Zone. Any and all comments welcome.

First, the guy that thought of putting carpet on a boat should be hung at sundown. That being said, any protection you can apply will extend the life of the 'sub-flooring'. Since a thin layer of resin will have a tendancy to crack during flex, I suggest an epoxy style of paint. This should flex some and prevent water intrusion.

Second, I will assume you have an open boat such as a bow rider. Either way..carpet sux, just to put it mildly.

When you get the new carpet be sure it can withstand water/weather/sand and what ever else may be accidently applied (such as Beer).

      Good luck

It's a 2252 Capri. and it is almost always covered or inside a barn. The carpet I already have is 20 oz UV stabilized marine.

my favorite recommendation: paint the floor with Durabak18 and use the carpet as a "snap-in-out" carpet. This way you protect the floor and if you really need carpet under your feet you have one you can take out to dry and clean.

hanging is to fast unless you do it at the feet........

Hi guys there is no doubt that carpet is essential need of every house. When your carpets are clean and your cushions are straight, the whole house looks great. As one of the biggest investments in your home, one of the key factors in maintaining a fresh, healthy indoor environment and a key factor in creating a home that is welcoming to visitors.so replace your carpets and buy new carpets.
Are you serious? Wall to wall carpeting is just about the filthest thing you can have except for a dirt floor. Pull one up sometime and take a look under there, its hideous. The first thing Doctors tell people with indoor allergies is to tear out all the carpets and install hardwood, linolium ect.

I'm still gnawing on what to do in the back of the boat. I yanked up the carpet and got to looking at the bigass NYS roadsign patch I put over the rotten spot years back. It made me think why not get some more and just layer it on up against the other piece. That way there is no water getting in back there at all and I already know you can't feel it through the carpet. It will stiffen hell out of the floor back there too for only 10 additional pounds. Time to go shop the scrap yard...

very serious: carpet is the nicest to your feet but the lousiest material everywhere and especially in a wet environment.

My carpet is still in pristine condition but I still hate it. Once all the other improvements are done I will rip out ALL carpet and paint with Durabak18 in a light color. In the areas where it might matter I may lay some carpet but only if the entire family forcefully requests it!

Cleaning will be dead easy: take the drain plug out and flush the deck. In the long run I expect no carpet in my boat.....

The problem is in your last statement. Best in the world be damned but in the long run the wimmin are going to go nuts for the carpet look / feel every time so you just have to cut your losses. :surr:surr:surr because you aren't going to win. I learned that long long ago and the rules never change.................................:thumb.
