Hey all....I have to ask this question because I am away workin on the sea far away from my boat at home and I need to order some parts for when I get home!

I've got an 86 2556 with the VP AQ260 GM 5.7 engine. I bought an aftermarket starter last year from a local Starter/Alternator shop and since last summer I have had to take the starter off 3 times and have it serviced because the shaft the bendix moves on to engage the flywheel gets corroded and sticks. Pretty sick of it actually....happening far too often. I have the starter rebuilt only 1.5 months ago and I was home the other day for a few hours and checked it.....stickin again! I'm done with this starter and am gonna order a new one online so I'll have it for when I get home in a couple of weeks.

Because I am not home to look at the old one......I need to know if the 260 starter is for a 12 3/4" flywheel or a 14". Also need to know if the bolts are staggered or inline. Or even better.....if you have a Sierra or Arco part number handy it would be great!

MAybe someone can pick out the one I need on this link and I can go ahead and order!

I'm gonna make an effort to keep my bilge a bit drier and reduce the moisture down there which I figure is causing the starter to corrode so fast. Gotta try to seal up the engine hatch a bit bitter to keep rain water from seeping in. Also possible that it's a crap starter and they used poor material in the construction. I'll have the old one fixed anyway to keep as an onboard spare.

Apparently this has been the month or months for starter motor topics.

• Any of the early Volvo Penta GM V-8's use the 153 tooth flywheel. Merc/OMC used the 168.
  
  The 153 always requires the straight across bolt pattern. (see the thread linked to above)
• That web site lists a Bendix Drive motor, and does not call several of their other listed stater motors "HTGR/PMGR", so I'd think that they're a bit behind in technology.
• That certainly helps.
• I'd not keep an old Bendix Drive motor around as a spare. Too heavy, outdated drive system, different wiring arrangement, etc.
  
  Buy two of the mini HTGR/PMGR motors (they're not all that expensive today), and keep an extra O/B.

Here's several examples of the solenoid lever arm action HTGR/PMGR motor that works with the 153 tooth flywheel.

Note the straight across bolt pattern.

Make sure that you receive the bolts with the motor.... the nose housing are not all the same dimensions.

Richard at Seamanufacuring in Florida can set you up with one that uses all steel reduction gears.

Thanks so much as usual Rick! I will contact Richard in Florida and see what he can do for me. Really not happy with my last two starters and I am very interested in the upgrade!! My boat hasn't been as easy to start since installing the last starter and I always blamed it on the carb but now thinking it was more to do with the lazy starter. I pulled my carb and found it to be very clean (always keep my gas fresh and stabilize when necessary). It sometimes floods when trying to start from cold......hoping this is because I Habs a crappy starter! Can wait to try the new one!
