    Hour meter to tach-gctid806972

    Hi

Anyone ever connected an hour meter to their tachometer? I'm thinking that the theory would be that the hour meter would only run when the engine is actually running then. I have an mercury 90hp outboard, so any suggestions for a better place are welcome.

    Cheers

May we assume that the intent is to power the hour meter only when engine operation is detected?

If so, I am not award of a tachometer that would offer a terminal for this.

For a 4 cycle engine that builds oil pressure, a N/O oil pressure switch would provide a means of powering the hour meter only upon engine operation.

However, unless you have a 4 cycle outboard engine, your outboard will not offer that capability!

If your concern is that your hour meter begins to log run-time when the key switch is turned on (and it's not actually counting true engine run-time), the margin of error from year-to-year is minimal. It is not enough to be worried about. [/color]

Thanks for your reply. And yes, I'd like to have the hour meter only run when the engine is running. Thanks for the oil pressure suggestion, I'll investigate it!

there is one that has a lead that wraps around a plug wire, only logs hours when the engine is running. no personal experience with the unit myself though

I'm wired into the Oil Pressure switch full - NO side piggy backed to the Electric Fuel pump+ (no fuel - no run - no log), opposed to the Key on triggered till run NC side.. works beautifully. SO when oil pressure hits 5+psi shes logging.

swapped this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/a...FZGCaQoddpcOiQ for the dummy light version

Check your threads however theres a couple variations for diff blocks
