In yarding the outdrive, found out that while the outdrive gear oil was clear, full and odor-free, the oil in the gearbox was NOT. Apparently, there is a restrictive elbow in the transom (plate?) which can become clogged and prevent circulation of the gearbox oil, leading to burning and breakdown. Mech says we caught it in time, but I was wondering, does anybody have any experience with this problem? He says there's an aftermarket elbow that solves the problem. Also, what pump circulates the gear oil? The gears themselves provide pumping action?

Yep, no pump. The dribble valve, hose, and the reservoir can possibly become clogged up with sludge. IMO regular maintenance would prevent that from happening.
