What is the purpose of this waterline fitting?-gctid804391

This is a fitting on the waterline going into the water heater on my 2855. What is the purpose of the plunger sticking out of the fitting? Is this just a T-fitting with a plug in the one outlet? The fitting is leaking and needs to be replaced. Can I use just a regular 90 degree fitting or do I need something specialized? Thanks for any help!

      Yes.

90┬░ regular fitting would do it.

After I cut it out I see that the lines are not standard 1/2", they are 15mm. Time to order a fitting.

I thought it looked like one of those quick disconnect fittings to attach a garden hose.
