    Racor Rebuild-gctid804239

    One of my racor filters is leaking. Looks like it's coming out of the bowl. I am going to rebuild it in the next few days. I am assuming that I unscrew the bowl, take the filter off and replace the o-rings and filter. Are there additional steps? How often should this be done?

    Any insite will greatly be appreciated as I have never done this before.

    It depends on how many hours you put on your boat, and how clean your tanks are. I do ours in the spring. Honestly The filters usually look fine when I change them.

    It depends what racors you have, but the should look similar to this.

    Sometimes the replacement o-rings are not exactly the correct size, and can be a bear to get to fit and seal correctly. If you have the time and a nearby parts source, take the old o-ring and get a few different sizes larger and smaller. I usually keep a full o-ring case onboard, you never know when you may need one.

      Jamie, I presume you have Racor R120P's. Changing the filter cartridge is a regular part of maintenance. I change mine around the 100 hours which happens to be around every season. Many have vacuum gauge on the top of the canister head to give you a better indication when to change out the filter. And don't forget the on engine fuel filter as well. It's good practice to change that too, or at least every second primary filter change.

            Incidentally, I prefer using R120T, 10 micron filters. Their flow specs are more than adequate for our engines and they do a better job at filtering than the 30 micron, R120Ts.

                Mariner, no need to get separate o ring kits, they come with the new R120p canister. Something you may consider is getting a spare screw on sight glass base. If you need to change a filter off shore, its way easier to screw the spare bottom onto the new canister, fill with diesel completely, then change/swap them out. Plus if you every break one trying to get it off the canister, unless you have a spare, you're up the creek!!
