Drive has to come off, the input shaft of the drive slides through the gimbal housing and into the engines coupler. the alignment tool goes in where the drives input shaft goes.

What builder didn't say was that if the alignment isn't correct it gimbal bearing and coupler take the forces, but not for long. It will also mean a lot less "blue" language.
