    2006 mercruiser 3.0 TKS running problem-gctid803652

Need help! starting motor when cold normally with 1100 rpm. when heating up rpm going down to 750 starts working roughly, when I slowly try to accelerate engine shuts off. what is the problem could be?

Got the same problem on my 5.0 today, first time out since october. I am going to try to do the simple things first, replace the fuel filter, check for vacuum leaks. I've already replaced the enrichment module a couple of years back. Check yours (if you don't have one check if the choke is sticking). Clean with carb cleaner. I will keep you posted on my progress, getting the filter tomorrow.

So is your motor running at 1100 rpms cold and then dropping to 750 after about 8 minutes? I would say that the TKS module is fine. You have another issue. Possibly bad gas, spark plugs or a vacuum leak. Try some Seafoam in the fuel tank for starters.

Engine should idle around 600-650 any higher shifting and running will be a problem.

Tks has a solenoid ... while running shoot some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb when the engine wants to quit stop, allow the engine to recover then do it again and again.

Sounds to me the solenoid is not opening all tthe way just like a choke carb / but with the tks system that i hate.

The piston on the solenoid could be gunked up, or the solenoid went, or is going.

Start with 600-650 rpm cold, running rough, short spray carb cleaner, start running perfect then shuts down and every time i spray into carb runs perfect then shuts down again.....maybe just some spark plugs problem or fuel pump.....

If the motor is only running at 600+ rpms at the cold start I would look at the TKS module and it's piston. I had the same problem on my boat. The most likely culprit is the piston behind the plunger on the TKS module is stuck in its bore in the carburetor. You need to get some carb cleaner in there to loosen it up. Once you get it free again you will hear a hiss near the carburetor when you start your motor cold, after about eight minutes the hiss will begin to get quite then stop. At this time you should be at normal warm idle speed. Right now your TKS piston is stuck in the warmed up position, thus no enriched mixture and rpm when you start cold. I'm guessing that if you can keep the motor running long enough to warm up to normal running temps it will run like normal.

Here is a link to the Mercarb TKS manual that will tell and show you what I'm talking about,

To get the carb cleaner to the TKS piston you will need to remove the TKS module and squirt the carb cleaner in the bore towards the piston that is stuck in there. I don't think shooting carb cleaner down the throat of the carb will reach this bore. I ended up taking off my carburetor and standing it on its side to let the cab cleaner soak into this bore which is horizontal when the carb is on the motor. You could also just remove the lid of the carb but that would be a little more involved but not much.

The issue is when the engine warms up. It starts running rough and stalls when put in gear.

I would think a carb rebuild certainly wouldn't hurt as well as running premium gas and additives...new plugs, fuel filter...has any of this ever been done since 2006? If not, I would think it is over due...imho

This sounded to me like the motor would not run long enough to warm up. Maybe Lap could correct me if I'm not fully understanding what he is saying. If the motor has never been tuned up certainly it would not hurt, but that alone may not cure this issue.

Question, do you hear a hiss when you start the motor cold? Like a vacuum leak in the carb?

Hey Crazy Russian, I think you might want to start a new conversation on your motor's issues. These two engines are completely different and should require different approaches. You will get more accurate help if you don't get mixed up in this troubleshooting effort for a 3.0 TKS.
