Either one will work, but I personally would go with the Garmin. The Icom unit only interfaces via NMEA 0183. It's a PITA to make the connections. Moreover, you don't really need a dedicated screen if you already have a chart plotter. The Garmin unit connects via NMEA 2000, this is easy and almost plug and play.

Two questions: Do you want to broadcast and receive, or just receive? And are you looking for a unit that has AIS in it, or just something that will give you AIS?

My system only receives, so I can see other AIS boats, but they can't see me .....unless I hit the 'Distress/Emergency' DSC red button on my VHF in the case of an emergency. Then my position and MMSI number are broadcast.

I have a https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/11...s chartplotter and an http://icomamerica.com/en/products/m...> Icom 422 VHF. I just installed a https://www.tindie.com/products/astu...> dAISy module with the https://www.tindie.com/products/astu...> NMEA adapter. It connects to both via the NMEA0183 connection on the Garmin. I also added its own antenna, a cheap Shakespeare 8' whip from WM for $41. Total cost was $124!

From 10 miles inland sitting in the RV parking lot of a community outside Sequim, WA, I can read AIS vessels all the way across the strait to Victoria, BC, and a stretch of the strait 40 miles wide!

A few members helped me with this, but it all started with a http://www.baylinerownersclub.org/in...t from TenMile.

      Hope that helps.
