  • Mercruiser 5.0L Starter Motor Problem-gctid395426

[1996 Bayliner Avanti, with Mercruiser 5.0L 350 hp starter motor broke into pieces. I disconnected the batteries, removed all wires and broken starter motor. I found the broken off piece of the starter motor and one small metal washer. I then checked for any loose pieces of metal and found a few. I installed a new factory starter motor and when trying to fire the engine, I heard the starter motor begin to turn the fly wheel however it slowed down and almost stopped, then rotated normally and then another slowing down and again almost stopped.

I need to know what steps to follow in order for me to be able to turn the engine over by hand to check the teeth on the flywheel for any other metal pieces. Thanks for the information.

Pull the plugs and try to crank, I'm thinking hydrolocked.
