so im in the market for a new to me boat. havnt really figured out what i want yet just gonna go check them out. i have a 86 2450 with a vp aq260 and 275 drive which i know inside and out so its gonna be hard to move over to the merc setups. i know this is hard to answer depending on abuse and how well a boat was cared for but lets just say i find a boat that is in perfect condition with all paper work to show maintenance. how many hours on the meter would have you saying wow thats just to many? i do know i want something with a big block (even gonna check out a 272 baja with a 502) i always felt my boat was alittle under powered. what would be the normal thing to go first the engine or the drive? just not sure if i should even check a boat out if it has over 500, 600, 700 hrs?? thanks Dave

In my book you are getting to rebuild time at about 1500. However, a properly maintained and properly sized engine/prop combo for the boat will go an easy 2000. By this I mean not having a 5.0L because it works but rather a 5.7 so as to lighten up the work a little. There is a reason I threw in 383's in Midnight Sun and it is not because I enjoy going fast.

At around 1500-2000 hours the motor will need a rebuild. Low hours worry me more than slightly high, because unused boats go bad faster than ones that are used and well-maintained. For every "worn out" motor I hear about, I hear about 20 of them that failed prematurely due to poor maintenance.
