    Starting problem-gctid347211

I have a Mercruiser 5.0l mpi 260hp gas engine new in 2010.Went to run it today,no start.Perfect when hauled last October and stored indoors all winter after full winterisation. I notice that the sound that used to come from the fuel pump (priming maybe?) on turning on the ignition does not happen now.Just a small vibration if you hold your hand against it.Is my pump shot or could it be something else ?Any ideas would be welcome.

If you suspect fuel pump you need to do a fuel pressure test or install a known working test pump.

If pressure is low replace the the pump if there is adequate fuel to the pump.

I agree, if a fuel problem,

test pressure, if low i would also check for battery voltage at the pump, if 12v is present, suspect pump/ replace

Was the kill switch out in the weather? That will slow it down.

Pump not primed??? Remove the Fuel Filter and fill to the brim with fresh fuel then replace the filter and try again..........Cheers!!

May sound dumb but double check the battery (try starting with another bank or a 'good known' battery).

By "no start", you mean it turns over but does not fire and run? Are you getting spark?

Verify that you are getting the correct voltage to the pump before anything else. There is a bypass circuit that is energized to allow the pump to run until the oil pressure switch is closed, there are other safeguards that may cause problems so you need to eliminate those first.

You should get a service manual or a wiring diagram to determine the circuitry and start chasing the problem from the ignition switch. It could be a lot of things, do not assume it is the fuel pump.

Good luck, it can be a chore chasing down problems but you will learn alot about your boat.
