I have a 85 Bayliner Trophy Hardtop 20ft 8inch 4cyl volvo. With me and 2 kids 23mph.I had it out with 4 adults 14 mph tops.I dont have a owners manual and dont know what the operating rpm is it doesntt seem to go over 3400rpm.I thought of playing with a different prop pitch and diameter.I cant find a capacity plate for weight and poeple any input will help. Thanks,Buck

First of all, no wonder your boat is slow. Judging from the pictures you will have a lot of drag pulling that hardtop through the water....

I have the same setup only it's an 86. LIghtly loaded you should see close to 5000 rpm. With the 4 adults you would see maybe 4600 rpm.

Check the tune up, clean bottom, compression etc etc.

Mine will run maybe 25mph lightly loaded. 23mph with 4 people. I think it is a great boat, great economy, but no speed demon. I have been very happy with the performance though. It is a fantastic engine.

Don't mess with the prop unless you checked everything else. However, it is possible someone put on the wrong prop.

Also, if some of the people are sitting in the back, and they are big, it will have trouble getting on plane. I have had 4 people though and it should still run 23 mph.

1... Yes, and in particular the progressive ignition spark advance. This is an old ignition distributor, and it may not be advancing as it should.

See your Volvo Penta OEM service manual for this spec.

        2... Agree!

Good point about the advance and easy to check. Attach a timing light, rev up from idle and watch it advance, or not...

Check out the BOC info post at the link below.

1st post has links for the oem volvo manual you can download to your computer.

The seloc manual has some errors and mis-information in it.

What prop do you have, did you just get the boat?
