    Tips and tricks-gctid393567

Ready to pull outdrive for inspection and alignment check. Already pulled bottom for impeller replacement. I see tons of how to's for removal but nothing for reinstallation. Any tips / tricks? Any pitfalls I need to watch out for upon installation?

      1. Make sure your outdrive is timmed down and get it as vertical as possible.

      2. Become familiar where the shift shaft is and how it is supposed to fit back together. Watch it when you put it back together, along with the other seals that have to go in.

      3. Use the material recommended in the manual on the seals, and gob it on there to get it to stay put while you put the outdrive back on

Thanks for the input. Is there an online manual?

Found one. Looked through it, the manual shows a small alignment tool for the shift rod, is this required or just makes job easier?

I didn't use the special tool. More important just to pay attention.

I am. Taking it slow. First time so spreading it out over a few days. Thanks.

The shift shaft placement plastic tool really helps but not really needed. It just helps hold the shaft in place while you put the drive back on, but you still have to pull it out before you seat the drive down. Push for a pull!

Came off with little drama. I now see what the shifter tool does. Preliminary alignment check shows a spot on alignment. Tool drops right in. Will do the real one tomorrow. Everything inside looks great. What is the best way to inspect bellows? They look great, no dry rot but if there was a crack or something it would be hard to tell??

You've already done one inspection - make sure no water is getting in where the u-joints are. I'm not an expert, but other than that, I imagine you are looking for signs of aging, like cracking, or rubber coming off on your finger when you rub it. Tilt the outdrive up and see if there are any cracks where the bellows bend on the outside bottom.

Alright, another question: getting ready to re-install out drive. While reading the manual, mentions rubber gasket must be properly glued in bell housing but fails to mention how to do this. Anyone know? The one currently installed is indeed glued. It looks perfect but I always replace all seals. Thanks.

Are you sure it says "glued". Mine says "positioned." I don't think anything gets glued when installing the upper outdrive.

                          Yes,

"IMPORTANT: Rubber gasket must be properly positioned and glued in bell housing bore before installing drive unit or water may leak into boat."

I checked the one installed and it is glued.

Through some digging bellows adhesive is mentioned. Any thoughts from someone who has done this?

Hmmm. I see that in the Mercruiser manual. My aftermarket manual I don't think said glue it, and when I removed mine it wasn't glued, so I don't know what to say.
